Katarina

Katarina is the capital city of the island of the same name. It is the seat of the Archduke's Palace, and of the Legendary, the premier theatre on the island.

The Anchor's Luck is a tavern located on the waterfront in the area of Katarina known as Low Town. It is owned by Ivan. Housed in one of the few surviving original buildings following the fire that ravaged the early town of Katarina, the Anchor's Luck is frequented by sailors and travelers, but has its share of old timers who whittle away hours playing low stakes card games when the morality police is not looking. The tavern itself is dark and remains in a constant haze of smoke from the numerous pipes as well as the fire roaring in the back wall fireplace.

Blossom Boutique is the premier florist shop in Katarina. Owned by the half-elf Roksolana, the shop offers fresh flowers from Sezja and beyond, and grows several kinds of flowers locally in two greenhouses on a farm on the outskirts of Katarina.

The Cathedral is the headquarters of the authorized faith of Sezja, and home to the Cardinal and his men. Built in a neo-gothic style, the Cathedral stands out like a sore thumb among the neo-classical buildings that surround Svetozar Plaza. Rumors abound of insipid jail cells in the basement of the Cathedral, where the enemies of the Cardinal are interrogated.

The Chateau Durso is a famous winery located on the mainland. Several of its vintages have won royal prices over the decades, including its always popular Sunrise, and its more exotic Dawn and Moonrise

The Classic is the city of Katarina's premiere hotel. Located on the north side of the Svetozar Plaza, the four stories neo-classical building offers an oppulent environment and an incomparable view of the harbor and the fjord leading to the sea. The Classic possesses the island's only Royal Suite, booked by the rich and notables who are concerned about comfort and security. Famous guests include Sir Sergeii, a world-famous barritone who recently visited the island for the first time.

Enchanted Soles Cobbler is a compact Low Town shop located across a small alley from Fabled Pages that specializes in made to measure shoes for men, women, and children.

Fabled Pages is a Low Town bookshop tucked away between a warehouse and a slum building for low wage workers, and across a small alley from Enchanted Soles Cobbler. Books are cheap and varied, but tend towards more popular appeal.

The Fantastic theatre leans more towards popular and bawdy comedies that are appreciated by those with limited income. The Friday night revelry and the Sunday matinee are both renowned, one for its debauchery and the other for its family atmosphere.

Gemstone Harbor is a small jewelry shop located uptown in Katarina. Owned by Veronika the jeweler, the shop caters mainly to middle class workers and to the servants of the upper class, with affordable prices and one of a kind creations. Marigold supplies some of the wares sold by the store, including small wooden jewelry puzzle boxes in a variety of difficulties.

The Kaleidoscope Winery is a shop that specializes in wines and other alcoholic beverages. Owned by the human Viveka, the shop is located on the Slope, this shop caters to all sorts of folks, from the rich and discerning palates to those who have only a silver or two to spend on a bottle.

The Katarina Library is a public institution dedicated to informing and educating the population of the island of Katarina, regardless of income and level of schooling. The main branch is located on the corner of Svetozar Plaza across from the Legendary, while satellite branches are located in every village on the Island of Katarina. Books can be borrowed through interlibrary loans.

The Katarina Palace is the official residence of the Archduke of Katarina. Built of locally quarried green granite, the Palace features a neo-classical style that has fallen out of fashion in Sezja.

Khoroshim is a three star restaurant located on the west side of Svetozar Plaza and caters principally to the wealthy and the nobility. It is the most well-known restaurant in Katarina, and it is famous for its ham marinated in Elvish honey and baked with gold leaf and white truffles and garnished with saffron and beluga sturgeon caviar. Khoroshim was the site of an attack that killed 4 and injured 17 a week before the King's arrival.

Low Town is the colloquial name given to the wharf, warehouses, and workforce housing neighborhoods located below the cliff of Katarina. All sorts of services, some legal, others not, can be had in Low Town for the right price and if you know where to ask.

The Legendary theatre is the premier facility for entertainment, where people go for excellent plays, music, and to see and be seen. Owned by Sir Gregory Tsaplin, and patronized by Archduke Maksimilian III, the Legendary features a large scene, an equally large rehearsal space, and a creative space large enough to accommodate the planning of a third production. The theater is situated at the south end of White Avenue, on the southeast corner of Svetozar Plaza, and stand at the opposite end of the Palace at the north end. Many businesses connected to the theater surround the building.

The Needle and Thread is a seamstress shop on the north side of the Legendary. Owned by the human Paula, the shop offers all sorts of threads, fabrics, and materials that can be used to create clothes and costumes.

The Opera theatre features modern and avant-garde productions that often push the limit of what is acceptable. Many of the locals find the productions put by the Opera to be overly complicated, but those who attend regularly swear that the questions raised from each and every play are well worth the price of admission.

The Palace is a five-story hotel owned by Sir Gregory Tsaplin next door to the theater, which provide free lodgings to members of the crew. More affluent members either rent or purchase accommodations elsewhere in the city. The rooms are sparse, but three meals are provided free of charge every day in the Palace's cafeteria.

The Serenity Center is dedicated to alternative and esoteric medicine. Located in the upper west side of Katarina, the Serenity Center caters to wealthy individuals searching for advice on leading a successful and happy life.

Sidorov Manor abuts the cliff on the western side of town. The estate is located next to the Whispering Waves cemetery to its west. Owned by the Marquess of Sidorov, this is a popular place for parties and social events. An invitation to Sidorov Manor opens the door to a small but powerful social circle.

Spokoya Bay is the deep water harbor located at the end of the Katarin fjiord and is the only easily accessed location where ships can safely anchor and unload cargo to the island. The city of Katarina is built on its northeast shores.

The Starlight theater is known more for its sensual pieces than the quality of its acting, and often attracts lovers and those in a romantic mood.

The Stetsyuk Art Gallery, which is located in the upper east side of Katarina, features the artworks of up and coming artists, as well as the valued works of established painters and sculptors. Having a piece showcased at the gallery generally augurs expensive commissions, while hosting an art show means the artist is now the talk of the town and is highly sought, even on the mainland.

Svetozar Plaza is the large park located near the top of the Slope in the city of Katarina. The literal and metaphorical center of town, Svetozar Plaza features elegant avenues, manicured lawns, large and beautifully maintained trees, and various ponds and small brooks populated by local wildlife. On a lovely Sunday afternoon, social classes readily mix on the plaza to enjoy strolling in the park, watching one of the many organized games, or seeing and being seen. Carriages are not allowed in Svetozar Plaza. To the north of the Svetozar Plaza stands the Classic, while to the west the Cathedral can be found.

The Warm Whistle is a cozy coffee shop in the upper east side of Katarina, and is the favorite haunt of famous actress Luba. Owned by Nastasia, the food there is delicious, the drinks are refreshing, the atmosphere is convivial, and the prices are reasonable. It's a great place for a first date!

The Whispering Waves cemetery is located on the western outskirt of the city of Katarina. In continuous use for more than 500 years, the cemetery is the last resting home to some of the island most famous (and infamous) residents. It is located to the west of the Sidorov Manor estate.

Klara

Klara is the northernmost town on the island of Katarina. It is the home of the Winter Palace, the Archduke's hunting lodge and vacation home.

The Winter Palace is the Archduke's vacation home. Once a primitive hunting lodge for the first Svetozar rulers, the building was expanded several times to what is now a remote but comfortable residence. The Archduke and his family usually come three or four times a year for visits lasting a week or two at a time.

Other Landmarks on the Island of Katarina

Mount Kilina is the tallest mountain on the island of Katarina, standing at over 4,000 feet high. Once extensively mined by dwarves century earlier, most of the iron ore has been removed from the mountain, leaving it a beautiful and quiet remote place.

    Red Larch

Interesting Places in and around Red Larch
    • Allsfaith ShrineJust south of the Singing Sword stands a grand stone mansion, with two wide wooden doors painted with the religious symbols of many gods. The doors are opened day and night, and the center of the building features a plain chapel with a small stone altar and no religious symbol. Used by many faiths and owned by none, the Allsfaith Shrine is staffed by a traveling pair of priests of two different faiths who stay here for one month, before being replaced by another pair.
    • Helm at Highsun:
    • Jalessa Orna's Butcher: The butcher shop occupies the first of four identical single-story stone buildings that run from the street towards the edge of the village in a line. The shop can be identified by a painted sign showing a ham being carved by a large iron cleaver. The second building appears to be a smokehouse, with two large chimneys emerging from the roof on either side, while the third building, with currently emptied flower pots and a clothesline indicate this is the owner's residence. The fourth building appears to be the constabulary office, with its two small windows sporting bars, where Harbuck Tuthmarillar, constable of Red Larch, and his deputies work.
    • Swinging Sword Inn: This inn is a three-story stone inn topped with a very steep slate roof dotted with a multitude of chimneys. The signboard, which hangs from chains above the door, displays a wooden scimitar emblazoned with the inn's name in red paint on each side. The property also features stables and several outbuildings to accommodate patrons' needs. Welcoming and luxurious by the area's otherwise rustic standards, each room features a hearth with a light fire, warm draperies and tapestries illustrating several scenes of recent history of the Dessarin Valley. Each room also has its own private bathroom with running water, provided by an intricate rooftop cisterns and heating system. This establishment is owned and run by Kaylessa Irkell.
    • Mother Yalantha's
    • Thelorn's Safe Journeys: Three huge sheds stand here in a triangle, surrounded by sturdy wooden wagons at all stages of assembly. The first is a workshop full of busy woodworkers, the second is a storage area for parts such as wheels and axles, and the third houses a dozen finished wagons for sale. The foremost wagonmaker in this region, Thelorn’s is now run by two grandsons of the founder. It is a busy, always-bustling place that works day and night (three shifts of workers) because making wagons of top quality takes time. The quality of Thelorn’s wagons is well known throughout the region, with the result that workers here have to toil flat-out to keep up Thelorn’s long-decreed “dozen spare wagons in stock, ready to go.”
    • Helvur Tarnlar, Clothier: Owned by Helvur and Maegla Tarnlar, a couple in their mid-fifties, Tarnlar’s is the only place to buy quality clothing for a hundred miles around. The square two-story building stands at the intersection of the Long Road and the Cairn Road. Its signboard is painted with the images of a well-dressed lord and lady, one on each side of the board. Ornate scrollwork iron bars protect the windows.

Mellikho herself oversees the work in the quarry, cajoling and cursing the sweating stonecutters here. When orders for her stone are backed up, Mellikho usually has her stonecutters work a night shift by torchlight. Mysterious dark-robed figures wearing stone masks have been watching them from the shadows, and the workers now refuse to work at night.
    • Luruth's Tannery
    • Bethendur's Storage
    • The Market:
    • Vallivoe's Sundries: Aside from the bewildering profusion of doors, barrels, rotting old furniture, and tools leaning against its outside walls, this building looks like a private home.
A small, faded sign on the front door reads “Vallivoe’s Sundries.” Rooms are crammed to the rafters with new wares and used items of all sorts, including furniture, lamps, carpets, mirrors, weapons, shields, helms, and a little bit of everything else. Almost anything might be available to buy here, buried under heaps of other stuff. This is the only place which sells blank books and parchment.
Bargewright Inn: Once a hilltop wayside inn, this building has slowly evolved into a walled community of ramshackle, often-rebuilt wooden towers and buildings now entirely cloaking a hill that overlooks the village of Womford across the river. Bargewright Inn reeks of manure and filthy mud. It houses blacksmiths, dealers who buy and sell horses, mules, and oxen, wheelwrights, coopers, and wagonmakers. It has inns, stables, and warehouses, and two concentric rings of high protective walls with gates that are firmly closed and barred by night. Individuals can pay stiff fees to be raised and lowered after sunset on rope-slung chairs, but nothing beyond what they can carry can pass.
Feathergale Spire: Home to the flamboyant Feathergale Society, this tall stone tower stands on a height commanding splendid views across the Sumber Hills. It can be seen from afar by anyone traversing the hills and is used as a private retreat by an elite hippogriff flying club comprised of rich dilettantes calling themselves the Feathergale Knights. Standing hundreds of feet higher than the surrounding hills, the Spire can be approached by a large road climbing a steep hill to a drawbridge. The base of the tower is about a hundred feet lower, with wide arches about halfway up. Aside from the drawbridge level, there are two more stories above, and the structure is topped by a parapet.

Lance Rock: As the name indicates, this rock appears like a giant-sized lance fell from the sky and impaled itself at an impossible angle. A necromancer styling himself as Lord of Lance Rock briefly dwelled in the cave system underneath the tip of the lance and conducted horrible experiments before meeting his demise at the hands of the Coopers.

Rivergard Keep: A large stone fortification first built around 4500 on the west bank of the Dessarin River, The Keep is located roughly 40 miles south of the Stone Bridge, 90 miles north of the Bargewright Inn, and 80 miles east of Red Larch. Rivergard Keep features a central keep surrounded by a twenty feet tall curtain wall on three sides and a sheltered harbor featuring a set of docks where ships can take refuge behind a massive chain designed to block entry into the keep. Three round towers protect the approach, while the old keep anchors the northeast wall. A gatehouse allows access to the inner courtyard. The entire structure looks in disrepair, but efforts are clearly being made to shore up the defenses. Scaffolding are spread out around three different sections of the keep, and construction crews continue to work even this late in the afternoon, with the sun rapidly sinking over the horizon.

Rundreth Manor: Atop a hill overlooking the Long Road less than a day’s travel north-east of Amphail and about a hundred and ten miles south of Red Larch stands ruined Rundreth Manor. This large stone mansion, now roofless and overgrown, is home to a mysterious and terrifying figure known far and wide as "the Dark Lady." Locals warn everyone to stay well away from the ruins. Only the two wings of the mansion remain intact. The remaining walls of the central building still stand three stories tall, but large sections have collapsed outward, and no signs of a roof remain. Dark trees grow within the perimeter of the building. All of the windows have been shattered, and sections of the roof on the wings have sagged. The entire structure is in a state of advanced disrepair.

Sacred Stone Monastery: An imposing stone structure about fifty feet tall, with two large metal doors up three steps, the Sacred Stone Monastery is home to a recluse order of monks who do not welcome guests. Windows about four inches wide and four feet tall sprinkle the facade of the building. A dozen chimneys on top of the structure release smoke in the air, indicating that the building is occupied.

Scarlet Moon Hall: Deep in the wild heart of the Sumber Hills about 120 miles north-northeast of Red Larch stands Scarlet Moon Hall, the ruined tower currently occupied by the druids of the Circle of the Scarlet Moon. Its remote location ensures that local hunters, prospectors, herbalists, and woodcutters rarely go near the place. Six stories high with a high pitched roof, the tower is in dire need of a major rebuilding project. The stone tower itself is surrounded by a ring of ruined walls. Large bonfires burn in the middle of several tent sites scattered around the base of the hill upon which sits Scarlet Moon Hall. Humanoid figures huddle around these fires, evidently preparing meals. From these campsites a small trail crisscrosses the hill to its summit. The stone tower itself is under repair, with several sections of wooden scaffolding reaching 50 feet up to the tower's roof. Rubble litter the inside of the ring, showing that the tower's renovations are in their early phase.

Shrine of the Tender Oath: Carved out of a mountain, the place known as the Shrine of the Tender Oath served as a contemplative temple where every dwarven deity could be worshipped, but where specially dedicated to rest, healing, meditation, and prayer. Nestled between two cascading waterfalls that flowed through the northeast Sumber Hills and from there into the Dessarin River, the area was known as the Vale of Dancing Waters. The fall of Tyar-Besil, the last dwarven city of Besilmer, severed the last link between the Shrine and those who built it, but the building and its dwarven monks endured for centuries, pursuing their contemplative ways. To this day, it is rumored that dwarven monks continue to worship in this otherwise secluded temple. More importantly, several texts mention that the Shrine of the Tender Oath may be connected through a system of tunnels to Tyar-Besil itself.

Stone Bridge: This gigantic stone archway, which runs two miles long and four hundred feet high, comfortably spans the widest spring flood of the Dessarin River. It is a sacred site of pilgrimage for many dwarves. Long ago, the dwarf god Moradin appeared atop the Stone Bridge to rally dwarves of the Ironstar clan against a horde of orcs. The founder of Besilmer, King Torhild Flametongue, died fighting a hill giant atop the Stone Bridge. Built to connect those parts of the dwarven realm of Besilmer on both the western and eastern banks of the Dessarin, the Stone Bridge is made of smooth, fused hard granite. It is only six paces wide and lacks railings or barriers, so anyone atop it is at the mercy of the wind, particularly in winter. The Stone Bridge is the only crossing of the Dessarin River between Ironford and Yartar; travelers and caravans frequently use it with care.

Tyar-Besil: One of the ancient fortress-cities of the shield dwarf kingdom of Besilmer, Tyar-Besil was constructed around 2100 under the Sumber Hills in the Dessarin Valley and served as the capital for a time. The city eventually fell to invaders, and its precise location remains unknown.

Womford: This tiny village has a dock on the Dessarin River for shipping the grain from its grist mill. It is also the local supply and market for the surrounding farms from which the grain comes. Aside from the mill, the village consists of a handful of granaries and a larger handful of cottages, several of which house tiny local shops. According to old tales, the village was known as Ironford until a dragon was slain nearby. Passers-by began to call the settlement “Wyrm Ford,” a name subsequently corrupted, thanks to the thick local accent, into “Womford.”

    Yartar

This fortified city commands the most northerly wagon bridge over the Dessarin River. A walled citadel on the west bank of the river connects to a bridge wide enough to accommodate two wagons with room to spare, connecting the Evermoor Way into and through Yartar. The road leads east to Everlund and Silverymoon, and west to Triboar and eventually Korvosa via the Long Road. Yartar is prosperous and increasingly crowded, so buildings have been torn down and taller ones built- four stories high in some instances. A Waterbaron who rules for life leads Yartar.
